History

The Avon Theatre began life in 1901 as a vaudeville house called Theatre Albert. By the 1950s, it was being used almost exclusively as a movie theatre.

The Stratford Festival bought the premises in 1963 after renting it for several seasons as a venue for its music and film festivals. A number of major renovations took place over the ensuing years, culminating in the massive renewal project that was completed in 2002. The Theatre currently seats 1090 people.

Stage

The Avon houses a traditional proscenium stage.

Food and Beverage

Wine, beer, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages, candy bars, nuts and small baked goods are available from either of the Avon Theatre’s two bars.

The Stratford Festival Shop

The Avon location of the Stratford Festival Shop offers a wide selection of books, music, giftware and souvenirs. Open before performances, during intermission and after performances.

Accessibility
Entry to orchestra seating is by aisles from the rear of the auditorium.  Balcony seating is not accessible to those with restricted mobility.

The theatre is wheelchair accessible, and a limited number of designated special-access parking spaces are available nearby. Service and Guide dogs are welcome in all our theatres; we ask patrons with service dogs to sit on an aisle or in our special access seating. House Programs are available in Braille and can be borrowed from the House Manager. All theatres are equipped with a wireless hearing assistance system. Please reserve your headsets in advance.
