About the Play

Raised amid the splendours of Moscow, sisters Olga, Masha and Irina now live with their brother Andrei in a dull provincial town. Yearning to escape, the sisters become enmeshed in a web of class conflicts and thwarted love as their brother’s new wife slowly takes over their house and their lives.

Chekhov’s richly drawn characters and unflinching psychological honesty bring us face to face with the ultimate problem of how to live lives of meaning and purpose.
Content Advisory  Though the plot involves an adulterous love affair and a fatal (offstage) duel, the characters’ sexuality is implied rather than overt, and there are no depictions of violence in the production.

Our recommendation: Suitable for most ages, but unlikely to be of interest to children.
