About the Play
The deadly Zastrozzi, “master criminal of all Europe,” seeks to avenge himself on Verezzi, an artist and self-proclaimed visionary. Aided by his henchman Bernardo and the arch-seductress Matilda, Zastrozzi weaves his web around his prey, only to encounter unexpected resistance from Verezzi’s tutor, Victor.
Suspense, swordplay and feverish sensuality, all laced with devilish wit: this Canadian classic reinvents Gothic melodrama as a comedy of amoral ideas.
Content Advisory The play is darkly sardonic in tone, deals with mature themes and involves some onstage violence. There are elements of sadomasochism in scenes with Matilda, a seductress who targets both sexes, and one scene involves full (male) frontal nudity. Our recommendation: Suitable for most people aged 16 and up.
