Exploring Voice

A Two-Day Practical Workshop for Speech-Language Pathologists

Our goal is to provide a comfortable and creative workshop environment where we may share the tradition of voice and movement work in the theatre with the professional world of speech-language pathologists. The small group format will ensure each individual has ample time for exploration and application of the practical work.

The Festival offers credit (no refunds) for cancellations before September 1, 2011. A processing fee of $35 will be deducted from the credit.

Day One: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 
8:45 a.m. Gathering (coffee and muffins) 

9 a.m. Opening remarks and welcome

9:30 a.m. Warming up for the work

10:40 a.m. Break

11 a.m. Unit One: Relaxation – techniques incorporating use of imagery and the connection to the skeletal structure.
(Break as applicable)

12:30 p.m. Lunch break

2 to 4:30 p.m.  Unit Two: Breath – the natural coordination of the breath and how we interfere with this process.

Day Two: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 
8:45 a.m. Gathering (coffee and muffins)

9 a.m. Unit Three: Sound – how a freer breath transforms the natural resonance in the voice.

Noon Lunch break

1:30 p.m. Unit Four: Words – how we connect sound to language and our ability to communicate.

3 to 3:30 p.m. Wrap-up session

Participants are encouraged to wear loose-fitting clothing appropriate for movement and being up and down on the floor (such as comfortable exercise wear). Layers, for warmth, may be important. All classes are practical and experiential.


 Instructors 

Janine Pearson is in her 22nd season at the Festival where, as Head of Voice and Coaching, she coordinates a team of specialist coaches who serve the acting company in meeting the physical and vocal demands of staging the plays in repertory. She also teaches for the Festival's Education and Conservatory programs. During her tenure here, Janine was also Head of Voice and, finally, Associate Artistic Director of the English section of the National Theatre School of Canada (Montreal). She is presently on the Advisory Council of Ryerson University's Department of Dance and Theatre and served as a guest teacher during the 2010 fall term. She has taught and given workshops across Canada, in the U.S. and in London (England) to actors, singers, educators, politicians, clergy and business people. For television, Janine serves as a dialect/dialogue coach on the CBC series The Republic of Doyle. Upcoming, she looks forward to teaching in the inaugural Core Program at HB Studios (New York). Janine holds an ADVS from the Central School of Speech and Drama (London); a B.Music and a BFA from the University of Regina; and an Associate Diploma in Singing from the University of Alberta (Edmonton).


Lori Holmes
is a respected speech-language pathologist with over 20 years of experience, integrating a solid background in science with practical experience in training the voice. For 11 years she has been an integral part of the coaching team at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where her combined skills are brought to support the challenges of the performing voice. A dynamic speaker, she provides workshops in voice care and training for various professionals throughout Ontario. She is an ongoing presenter with the Artists' Health Centre (Toronto), providing workshops and lectures to professional artists and students in training. In London, her private practice, WellSpoken, provides voice, speech and fluency therapy as well as services in communication skills, accent reduction and voice rehabilitation for actors. She currently teaches the graduate course in Voice and Voice Disorders to speech-language pathology students at the University of Western Ontario, lectures to the otolaryngology residents at the Schulich School of Medicine and is the speech-language pathologist in the Vocal Function Clinic, London Health Sciences Centre. Lori obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in communication disorders and a Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from the University of Western Ontario.
