Barbara Budd

First Name:  Barbara
Last Name:  Budd

Event:  As It Happened To Me

As Co-host of CBC Radio’s “As It Happens” for over 17 years, Barbara’s voice became familiar to listeners across Canada and around the world on stations of American Public Radio, CBC and Satellite. But her voice is familiar too, for her recurring guest appearances on the highly acclaimed comedy shows “The Mercer Report” and “The Royal Canadian Air Farce .”

Awarded the John Drainie Award from ACTRA for excellence in Broadcasting, and The Donald Bryden Pinnacle Achievement Award from York University she is known not only as a broadcaster but as an actor, event-host and narrator of documentary films, animation and tv series.

Barbara is featured on four Juno Award Winning recordings on The Classical Kids  Label. (Vivaldi’s Ring Of Mystery, Mozart’s Magic Fantasy, Hallelujah Haydn, and Tchaikovsky Discovers America)  But she is as ‘at home’ on the concert stage as she is behind the microphone, performing works for narrator and orchestra with the major symphonies of Canada.  (Among them:  The National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, The Montreal Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony, and The Vancouver Symphony )

After graduating from York University (Theatre Performance) Barbara became a company member of The Stratford Festival. Over 5 seasons under the direction of Artistic Director Robin Phillips, she appeared in 19 productions.
(Audrey in As You Like It, Emilia in Othello, Clarisse in The Servant of Two Masters, Jenny Diver in The Beggars Opera … and substituting for Maggie Smith as Titania/Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.) She performed in major theatre companies across Canada before she settled down to a life behind the microphone, encouraged as she was by Peter Gzowski, the long-time host of the very popular Morningside on CBC.

It was a natural transition,  her move to radio where soon as Co-Host of As It Happens  she was able to share  the personal, inspiring, dramatic, and sometimes mad-cap  stories of world leaders, scientists, artists, and just plain folks from around the world  with the rest of the world.

Happily for her, she has been able to share her greatest love - story telling - in just about all its forms.  On disc, on-air, on stage, in cartoon form, in print, in documentaries, and with full orchestral accompaniment too.
But happily too, she has spared the world her re-counting of stories through interpretive dance.
