U.S. Donors

The Stratford Festival is proud of its long-standing relationship with its U.S. patrons. Individuals from Michigan, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Arizona and, in fact, every corner of the country, have been attending the Festival since the days in the tent. Our U.S. friends are a key segment of our audience and donor base and through their involvement – patronage, membership, leadership gifts, outreach and volunteering - they have helped shape the Festival into North America’s leading classical repertory theatre.

Tax Information for U.S. Residents
A U.S. resident may deduct donations to domestic organizations that distribute funds to charities in foreign countries, as long as the American organization controls the distribution of the funds. There is such an organization that allows you to support the Stratford Festival - the Stratford Shakespearean Festival of America, a Michigan nonprofit corporation as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Federal Identification Number is 38-2420887.

Through an agreement between the Stratford Festival and Stratford Shakespearean Festival of America, donors to Stratford-America are granted full membership benefits in the Stratford Festival.

Member Groups

Since the days of the tent, our Members and patrons from the United States have been extremely supportive of the Festival. Your commitment to classical theater has extended long distances and four generations. In appreciation, the Festival is thrilled to offer a variety of special opportunities for our American friends during our season. Order early… these events are known to sell out!

Our valued Members from south of the 49th parallel go out of their way to support the Stratford Festival. They are willing to endure the possibility of lengthy border crossings, escalating gas prices and an uncertain dollar in order to experience the best classical theatre in North America. The Festival truly appreciates this tremendous level of dedication and support from our U.S. Members.

The response from our U.S. Members to Artistic Director, Antoni Cimolino’s 2013 playbill is extremely positive and energetic. The Chicago Associates, Michigan, New York and Ohio Members are encouraging this momentum by organizing two exciting weekends in Stratford. They invite Members from across the U.S. to support the Festival in this exciting time of transition.

The best way to fully experience the Stratford Festival and all it has to offer is to get involved, so we invite our U.S. Members to consider attending the following events and activities.

Michigan Members more...

If you're a Member of the Stratford Festival and live in the state of Michigan, you automatically belong to the Michigan Members.

Well into its second decade as an official support group of the Stratford Festival, the Michigan Members have a strong history and commitment to educational initiatives. They host their extremely successful Michigan Members' Weekend in Stratford in June of each year, as well as promoting educational initiatives throughout their home state.

The Michigan Members' Weekend in Stratford will be held on June 22 and 23, 2013. For full details, see below or refer to the U.S. Member Weekends itinerary in the Beyond the Stage section of our website.

Saturday, June 22, 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Paul D. Fleck Marquee, Festival Theatre
Blood is thicker than water…
When the 2013 season was first announced, Antoni Cimolino, our newly appointed Artistic Director, said one of his goals is to invite audiences to enhance their enjoyment of the productions by exploring various thematic strands that run through the playbill as a whole. One of these strands is the concept of “the family”. Whether it is the parent/child relationship in Romeo and Juliet and Merchant of Venice, the husband /wife relationship in Fiddler on the Roof or the brotherly love of The Three Muskateers, the concept of family is something to discover in 2013. Michigan Members will be encouraged to discuss the family and its multitude of qualities.
Lunch provided.
Cost: $50 Cdn plus tax.

Sunday, June 23, 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Paul D. Fleck Marquee, Festival Theatre
Fiddler on the Roof
Stratford’s much loved Donna Feore is back at the Festival to direct Fiddler on the Roof, with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein. Donna will not only direct, but also choreograph this infamous musical set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. Ms Feore and her creative team will take the Michigan Members behind the scenes to learn what goes into staging something as complicated and detailed as the iconic “bottle dance”. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to move!
Lunch provided.
Cost: $50 Cdn plus tax.

The Michigan Residency
The Residency is an annual education outreach program bringing Stratford Festival artists to Michigan schools and universities with the goal of promoting Shakespeare and encouraging and nurturing an understanding and interest in classical theatre.

The first Stratford Festival workshop offered in Michigan for Michigan-based teachers was held in 2001. Festival actors Sara Topham and Edward Daranyi returned the following year and the workshop doubled in size to 60 participants. Since that time, the programming has grown to include not only teacher workshops but workshops for grade school students and university students in Drama, English, and Education faculties.

In 2010, the Residency extended from November 1st to 11th. The Festival’s Education Department assembled a group of 15 teaching artists and divided them into three teams which allowed them to cover a wider geographic area, working with students and teachers in East Lansing, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Ann Arbor and Detroit & environs. As well, a workshop was offered to students from Mosaic Youth Theatre and a one-day Teachers’ Workshop was offered at Detroit Country Day School.

The Residency is supported through the Michigan Education Outreach Fund, a fund held within the Stratford Shakespearean Festival Endowment Foundation. This fund, established in 2007, will ensure the future of educational outreach in Michigan.

For information on how you can support the Residency, please contact Christine Seip, Major Gifts Manager at 1.800.561.1233, ext. 5630.
