The Easy Straight by George Meanwell | Stratford Festival
George Meanwell and Anna Atkinson perform "The Easy Straight", the title track from George's just released CD/DVD. This instrumental was composed in the spring of 2011 in memory of Wayne Robson, the actor who was to play "Grampa" in the Festival production of "The Grapes Of Wrath", but who passed away early in the rehearsal period. This music was used for the bows throughout the production. The title comes from the eulogy which Jim Casey gives in the play at Grampa's burial:
"An' I wouldn't pray for a ol' fella that's dead. He's alright. He got a job to do, but it's all laid out for him an' there's on'y one way to do it. But us, we got a job to do, an' they's a thousand ways, an' we don' know which one to take. An' if I was to pray, it'd be for the folks that don' know which way to turn. Grampa here, he's got the easy straight. An' now cover 'im up and let 'im get to his work."

Mise en scène
This film offers a musical, tongue-in-cheek retelling of the life of Tony, Olivier and Dora Award-winning director, writer and composer Des McAnuff. Using the song "The Wind and the Rain" as a script, the film begins with Des unaccompanied and builds to a grand finale in true Shakespearean tradition. The stylistic approach pays tribute to a time of limited means and creative ingenuity, blending film and theatrical language to create a surreal mise en scène. Produced by the National Film Board of Canada in co-operation with the National Arts Centre and the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Foundation on the occasion of the 2012 Governor General's Performing Arts Awards.

LYRICS:
The lights go down and the spotlight shines
There's a silence from the seats where the audience lies
Now my heart starts beating and I just can't wait
I know they're anticipating us to hit the stage
CHORUS:
It's on us
It's go time, show time, no time for any mistakes
It's on us
It's go time, show time, no time for any mistakes
It's on us
And I'm ready, I've been working so hard
The stage is the only place
I feel that I belong
It's on us
Jesus Christ Superstar, brought to the stage
The story of Judas' struggle that left Jesus betrayed
But this no ordinary story, it's a musical rendition
I bet you won't even leave your seat for the intermission
Listen, what would you do if a member of your crew
Wasn't really the person that you thought that you knew
Take a journey with Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot
Watch it unfold in King Arthur's Camelot
They all headed west, the result of a Dust Bowl
A better life quest, for work they'd have to hustle
But to no avail, Cali has failed around death and struggle
Makes 'em mad, last breath
Feel The Grapes of Wrath
Shipwrecked twins take the stage for the Twelfth Night
Viola foolin' everybody although it's in plain sight
Born a woman but a man that she be pretendin'
Only to muddle herself with misguided affections
CHORUS
Picture two married women, sharp like a ging-su
Now picture a fool, with no idea what he's into
Try'n court 'em both, yeah, he's try'n be a swindler
Be careful when you messin' with The Merry Wives of Windsor
And Misanthrope is a story of a man I wouldn't like to be
He's bitter and he's not into social niceties
He's offensive to people all around the town
And see as his love interest turns his world upside down
Richard III rose to power through violence
This historical play always leaves the crowd in silence
It displays the absolute worst of human ambition
As this brilliant work comes to fruition
Labeled and depicted as the one that's most gory
A blood-thirsty saga of Tamora and her story
Seeking vengence for the murder of her son
Titus Andronicus leads a battle with his loved ones
CHORUS
