The "Pathways to Cultural Belonging" (PATH) is a tool that is used for every production that inventories cultural elements that are identified in the script and the creative vision. It captures the evolution of when cultural elements are identified, discussed, and addressed throughout the entire process (planning > pre-production > rehearsal > technical rehearsals > performance). It is recommended to utilize the “Living Guidelines to Production Processes” as a starting off point, prior to and while filling out the "Pathways to Cultural Belonging".
The goal of the PATH is to anticipate moments where cultural harm may occur and to create a process that will allow for transparent accountability throughout the production process. By using the PATH, we can work together to define the resources that are required and available, rather than reacting to issues after the fact. This process should include, but is not limited to; the EDI Office, the Directors’ Office, Production Office, directors, designers, cultural consultants, stage management, actors, running crew, and front-of-house staff.
Interpreting cultural harm is subjective and we openly acknowledge that each person will experience the production process differently and that instances of potential harm are personal. We also acknowledge that those who compile the PATH are contributing from their own individual lenses and we recognize that they will not be able to anticipate everything. We’re using an online database modelled on our health and safety practices to communicate interdepartmentally about this.
By approaching this collaboratively at multiple stages during the production process, it will create a sense of belonging and will help make the work of equity and inclusion the responsibility of all of us who work at the Stratford Festival. We do this to make the production process better for everyone and to create an environment where all can be heard and feel fully empowered while working at the Festival.
