While the continuing COVID-19 pandemic has dashed any hope of reopening our theatres this year, we have been hard at work on planning an exciting new season for 2021.

That season is still a work in progress: the safety of our patrons, artists and staff is always our first priority, and that responsibility informs every aspect of our planning. We cannot simply mount in 2021 the playbill we had prepared for 2020; while we hope to present all of those works in future years, our immediate focus must be on repertoire that lends itself to production in the current extraordinary circumstances.

We must also ensure that the venues we open will continue, in an ever-evolving situation, to meet the directives of public-health authorities. Our challenge is to mount a season that conforms to the need for physical distancing and other pandemic-era realities while still offering you the unparalleled theatrical experience you expect of the Stratford Festival.

But with every challenge comes opportunity. The pandemic has forced us to re-examine every assumption about our art, to explore every conceivable option, to ask ourselves profound questions about the essence of our work and the nature of the bond between artist and audience. Those are the kinds of challenges that spark innovation, adventure, new creative energy.

The cancellation of our 2020 season will always leave an aching void in our hearts. But as we look ahead to 2021, and the new possibilities that it will bring, we feel rising within us the same pioneering spirit that impelled our founders to persevere, and ultimately to triumph, in the face of daunting odds.

We thank you for standing by us in 2020, and we look forward beyond measure to welcoming you once more to our new season in 2021.
