Playwright of Christina, The Girl King. Michel Marc Bouchard was born in 1958 in Lac Saint-Jean, Québec. He has written more than 20 plays, six of which have been adapted for film. His works, translated into many languages, are regularly performed around the world. Various productions of his plays, most notably of Lilies or the revival of a romantic drama, The Tale of Teeka, The Orphan Muses, The Coronation Voyage, Down dangerous passes road and The Madonna Painter, have garnered many awards including the Dora Mavor Moore Award and Chalmers Award (Toronto), National Arts Centre Award, Betty Mitchell Award (Calgary), Prix du Journal de Montréal, Primo Candoni (Italy), SACD (France) and awards from critics’ associations in several countries. He received four nominations for the Governor General’s Award for literature, including for Christina, The Girl King. His screenplays have been nominated for Gémeaux, Jutra and Juno awards. Lilies, directed by John Greyson, won the 1996 Genie Award for best motion picture and The Tale of Teeka, directed by Tim Southam, won the 1998 Gémeau for best dramatic program. In English Canada, the Shaw Festival, the NAC, Canadian Stage, Factory Theatre, Vancouver Playhouse, the Arts Club Theatre and the Centaur Theatre have produced his work. He has been writer-in-residence at Théâtre de Quat’Sous and Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montréal, New Dramatists in New York, the Banff Centre for the Arts (Alberta), the Festival de Limoges (France), Teatro della Limonaia (Florence) and Teatro d’Argot (Rome). Recently Tom at the Farm (Tom à la ferme), the film adaptation of one his latest plays, co-written with director Xavier Dolan, won the International Critics Award at the 2013 Mostra in Venice and received six nominations for the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards. The English version of the play will be part of the upcoming season at Buddies in Bad Times in Toronto. Finnish director Mika Kaurismaki recently directed his screenplay based on the life of Queen Christina of Sweden. Michel Marc is currently working on The Divine, a play commissioned by the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. In 2016, the Opéra de Montréal will première a new opera based on his play Lilies. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and Knight of the National Order of Quebec. For more information:
