THE APPEAL

Festival Theatre
Saturday, September 22, 2018
10 to 11:30 am

"We have a good appeal," Atticus Finch says to Tom Robinson after his conviction in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Decades after the verdict, the Supreme Court of Stratford will hear the appeal. It will be argued that the conviction should be overturned because it was based on unreliable evidence and tainted by racial bias. The court, which will be presided over by Justice Rosalie Abella, the most senior justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, will be asked to declare Tom Robinson innocent posthumously.  Joining Justice Abella on the bench are former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Frank Iacobucci and former Governor General David Johnston. Acclaimed lawyer and Alabama native Chilton Davis Varner will argue for the Crown. Canadian advocate Guy Pratte will represent Tom Robinson on his appeal.

Please reserve tickets in advance. Tickets are free, or you may make a monetary contribution toward the event.

SUPPORT FOR THE APPEAL IS GENEROUSLY PROVIDED BY THE ADVOCATES’ SOCIETY, BORDEN LADNER GERVAIS LLP AND GUY AND MARY PRATTE
