WE DARE YOU TO TRY IT – THE PLAY, THAT IS

When a suburban boomer couple return home to find their queer millennial daughter, Annabel, hosting a swingers’ party to make cash, they’re forced to question the state of their marriage. Annabel, in turn, must ponder her own future when she adds a new relationship to her chosen family of polyamorous and platonic roommates. In this high-spirited sex romp, it’s not just the earth that moves, as shifting paradigms encourage new possibilities, both personal and political.

This production takes place in Toronto, in the very near future.

CREATIVE

    Sunny Drake
    Playwright

    Playwright of Every Little Nookie

Sunny's inventive and award-winning theatre works have been presented in over 60 cities across the world and translated into four languages. His wide range of venues have spanned international arts festivals, underground punk warehouses, regional theatres and youth centres.

Last year Sunny premièred a TV adaptation of his project CHILD-ish with adults speaking children's exact words about love, life and the world. You can view the series on his website (sunnydrake.com). The full CHILD-ish digital production was presented by some of Canada's most established theatre companies: Soulpepper, Stratford Festival, Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, Prairie Theatre Exchange and Shadbolt Theatre.

In 2020, his comedy Men Express Their Feelings was described by the Calgary Herald as an "instant Canadian classic." The play received a Calgary Theatre Critics Award nomination for Best Original Play. During the pandemic, Sunny adapted it into a three-episode audio series, which you can listen to on his website.

Sunny is currently developing a new audio series called Climate Change & Other Small Talk, produced in association with Why Not Theatre. He has invited nine playwrights and companies from around the world to collaborate on the series. He developed the idea at a residency onboard a tall ship sailing through the Arctic Circle.

Sunny was commissioned by the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, Playwrights Guild of Canada and ATFC to write the 2019 World Theatre Day message for Canada. He was awarded the inaugural Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize (2019) for having a significant impact on performing arts in Ontario, and was a finalist for the K. M. Hunter Theatre Award (2018). For Every Little Nookie, he was awarded the Playwrights Guild of Canada's national comedy award in 2021 (The Chris Tolley & Dharini Woollcombe Comedy Award).

Perhaps his greatest achievement however was sleeping in a bathroom for months (yes a functioning bathroom!) when he was a struggling theatre artist. For very cheap rent, he slept on a mattress on top of the bath tub beneath the shower faucet - he is proud that he didn't once get soaked in his sleep!
