Marx and After
Saturday, July 20

What’s the value of a unit of work, and who decides? What’s the ultimate legitimacy around owning a piece of land? Marx threw out questions that seemed to invite answers that would make the world a more equitable place, but that little experiment didn’t work out too well. Is there another way that Marx’s ideas might work in practice? Democratic Socialism says yes.

Panellists:
Sheila Copps, former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada
Charles Foran, journalist, author and former CEO of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship
Rick Salutin, Toronto Star current affairs columnist

Moderator:
Nahlah Ayed, host of Ideas

New Ideas host Nahlah Ayed starts her new assignment at the Stratford Festival! For the past six years, CBC's Ideas has been a regular presence at the Stratford Festival, broadcasting Forum events for a national audience. Long-time host Paul Kennedy has now retired, and taking over the host's seat on this influential program is veteran CBC foreign correspondent Nahlah Ayed. Ms Ayed was based for many years in the Middle East, where she covered everything from the Gulf War to the Arab Spring. For the last seven years, she has worked out of CBC's London bureau, reporting on Brexit, the European migrant crisis, the conflict in Ukraine and Russia's annexation of Crimea, and other major news stories of our time. Her book A Thousand Farewells was a finalist for the 2012 Governor General's Literary Awards. "I have dedicated my career to discovering the world, covering some of its most intense moments," she says. "While I've investigated the why, how, what, when and where, I've had a burning ambition to go deeper. I am passionate about the opportunity to finally connect the disparate dots and to marshal all my energy to uncover the critical 'why.'"
