Honouring the life and work of the foremost composer-lyricist of the modern musical theatre: the most inventive, the most adventurous, the most intelligent, the most influential - simply the best.
This presentation will explore Sondheim's achievement as the great musical dramatist of human relationships - personal, marital, romantic, political. Drawing on the whole chronology of his career, from the early joyous Saturday Night to the late complex masterpieces Into the Woods and Assassins, it will include songs moving, searching, hilarious - sometimes all those things at the same time. The title song comes from Into the Woods and sets up a theme of how personal relationships change and develop - and how they move outwards as individuals combine into communities: how, as John Donne said, "no man is an island' or, as Stephen Sondheim said, "No One Is Alone".
