Romeo and Juliet: When Comedy Turns Tragic

Online - Zoom
April 11, 2024 – April 25, 2024
8:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Digital Forum Academy: Shakespeare Deep Dive

Study up on each of the Shakespeare plays coming to the stage in Stratford's 2024 season. Pull your tights up and leap with merriment into the text to explore genre, Shakespeare’s sources, his dramatic structure, and explore central images and motifs. Over this three-week online series, you'll read the full text of the play, contextualizing it within Shakespeare’s life and times through guided instruction and class discussion with Professor Jonathan Ullyot.

No experience is required, except an interest (and maybe love) of Shakespeare. Each series is a maximum of 15 students and will offer the same content.

Jonathan Ullyot is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, earned a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Chicago and teaches literature at the Universities of Toronto and Chicago and Seneca College.

Romeo and Juliet: When Comedy turns Tragic

Last done by the Festival in 2017, Romeo and Juliet was one of Shakespeare's most popular plays in his time, second only to Hamlet. In this class, we'll explore Shakespeare's classical sources, including Ovid and Dante and Boccaccio; the unique dramatic structure of this play, which involved the "switch" from comedy to tragedy; and Shakespeare’s unique prosody in this “rhyming” play.

This Digital Forum Academy series is being presented twice and includes three online seminars that take place weekly and three pre-recorded lectures. Seminar dates are non-interchangeable across the series. Please choose from:

Romeo and Juliet: Series B, Beginning April 11

  • Seminar 1: Thursday, April 11 | 8–9:00 p.m.
  • Seminar 2: Thursday, April 18 | 8–9:00 p.m.
