ETHICAL SCIENCE?

Lazaridis Hall, Tom Patterson Theatre
Thursday, August 20, 2020
10:30 am

Since its publication nearly 200 years ago, Frankenstein has been read as a cautionary tale of the dangers of creation and experimentation. What seems to drive most contemporary critics who invoke “playing God” is a fear of the unintended consequences of scientific discoveries and new technologies. Our panel talks about new scientific developments and whether there are lines that should not be crossed.

Panellists:

  • Timothy Caulfield, Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy, Faculty of Law, University of Alberta
  • Brian Goldman, Physician and Host of CBC Radio's White Coat, Black Art
  • Alison McGuigan, Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, Institute for Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto

Moderator:

  • Karin Wells, CBC documentarian, reporter and producer
